OK, that was a really short post … too short for an inaugural post, in my opinion. So, I did some investigating with a web search engine and found out that July 05 happens to mark a special anniversary in the field of genetics.
What is that anniversary? Well, on this day 20 years ago (i.e. July 05, 1996) Dolly the sheep was born. What’s so special about Dolly? Well, she was the first mammal cloned from the genetic material derived from an adult cell. Dolly the sheep is on display (thanks to the art of taxidermy) at the National Museum of Scotland. A more detailed read about Dolly and the ethical issues surrounding cloning was presented in the magazine section of the March 18, 2003 issue of Current Biology in an article titled “Death of Dolly marks cloning milestone”. This article is much more detailed than the aforementioned museum web page but should still be understandable by those who’ve taken high school level biology.
